The Importance of Thumbnails for Landscape Painting

There are times when going out with a sketch book and pencil is more productive than going out with canvas and paints.
The main purpose of a thumbnail is to come up with a composition, sort through everything we see in front of us outside or from the photo we're using, and finding the shadow pattern. Sketches help to prepare for a painting. Finding a good composition and the right time of day makes the painting a lot more successful.
